Volume Imbalance
Volume Imbalance is now an add-on
Previously, the Volume Imbalance indicator was built into Bookmap as part of the Studies dialog.We changed it - now you can install and uninstall it as any other regular Bookmap add-on. This allows us to deliver new versions of the Volume Imbalance faster.
We also improved the widget location - instead of appearing in the top-left corner of the tools bar, you can now find it near the right edge of the chart, next to subchart widgets. These changes should make it easier to use and interpret.
Volume Imbalance Overview
Volume Imbalance shows the ratio between the traded buy and sell volumes. It helps traders identify whether market orders are more aggressive on the buy or sell side.
The ratio is calculated as:
Volume Imbalance = (DAV - SAV) / (DAV + SAV)
DAV - Buy aggressor volume; SAV - Sell aggressor volume
A positive ratio indicates that buying aggression dominates, while a negative ratio shows stronger selling aggression.
Volume Imbalance is calculated based on the trading data visible on the chart. When the chart is moved horizontally in drag mode, the widget updates to reflect the new portion of market activity shown on the screen.
Interpretation
Traders can use Volume Imbalance to evaluate whether trading activity is currently dominated by buyers or sellers. Large positive values can indicate short-term bullish pressure, while large negative values can point to strong selling pressure or market exhaustion.
Settings
Volume Imbalance can be installed as a regular Bookmap add-on. The following parameters can be adjusted:
- Calculation range – defines how many time or price intervals are included in the calculation.
- Smoothing factor – applies a weighted average to smooth out short-term spikes in the data.
- Sound alert – sets an audible notification when imbalance reaches a configured threshold.
If the ratio is positive, the number appears in the buyer color. If negative, it appears in the seller color.

The Volume Imbalance indicator is part of the Bookmap Global+ Package. You can try it for free with any package in replay mode and with delayed instruments.
Installation
Please note that the Volume Imbalance indicator is compatible with Bookmap version 7.4.0 build 11 or later.
